The Madera County Transportation Commission is the Regional Transportation
Planning Agency (RTPA) and the newly designated Metropolitan Planning
Organization (MPO) for Madera County. The City of Madera qualified as new urban
area in 2000 with a population of 50,027 within the urban boundary established
by the United States Census Bureau. The Madera metropolitan boundary
covers the entire County of Madera. The Commission is responsible for the
development and adoption of the Regional Transportation Plan and Transportation
Improvement Program as required by state law.
The Commission’s role is to foster intergovernmental
coordination; undertake comprehensive regional planning with an emphasis on
transportation issues; provide a forum for citizen input into the planning
process; and to provide technical services to its member agencies. In all these
activities the Commission works to develop a consensus among its members with
regards to multi-jurisdictional transportation issues.
